This year, all the proceeds will be going to renovations for the William Grimm memorial at KSU. William David Grimm was born on October 13, 1962. He attended Kansas State University, graduating in the class of 1986 and earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. In 1991, Captain Grimm was serving in the Middle East as a part of Operation Desert Storm, the American-led coalition waging war against Iraq for their invasion and annexation of Kuwait. On January 31, 1991, while performing an armed reconnaissance mission, Captain Grimm’s AC-130H Spectre Gunship “Spirit 03” was shot down. He was awarded a Silver Star posthumously for his actions during his mission. His commendation reads that, “the actions of Captain Grimm aided the allied forces in repelling the Iraq Army incursion.” As the navigator of his AC-130, Captain Grim displayed, “professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty,” on that January day in Southwest Asia. Captain Grimm was the only Kansas State Graduate to be killed during Operation Desert Storm. . Few even know his memorial exists.
